14 statements on the issues dividing Malaysia right now. Islam and syariah law, Bumiputera rights, education, Najib Razak and subsidies. See your alignment with all three coalitions.
Pakatan Harapan
Your answers most closely match Pakatan Harapan, the coalition of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim (PKR, DAP and Amanah). You support reform, targeted subsidies, a multiracial approach and the supremacy of the Federal Constitution.
Barisan Nasional
Your answers most closely match Barisan Nasional, led by UMNO and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. You support Malay and Bumiputera rights, the unity government and clemency for Najib Razak.
Perikatan Nasional
Your answers most closely match Perikatan Nasional, the opposition alliance of PAS and Bersatu. You support a stronger role for Islam and syariah law, Malay and Bumiputera rights and oppose subsidy cuts.
Statements, asked twice
You take a position on sharp political and ideological statements using a six-point agreement scale. Key positions appear twice with opposite framing, once sympathetic and once critical. How much your answer shifts between the two framings becomes your framing bias score.
Alignment, not loyalty
The result shows how closely your answers match each position across all issues, not just the ones you feel strongly about. You might find you align with a party or ideology you didn't expect, or that you're genuinely split between two.
Politics in Malaysia: the context of this test
Malaysia is a federal constitutional monarchy. The 222-member Dewan Rakyat is elected by first-past-the-post. The last general election was held in November 2022, and the next must be held by early 2028.
The party system
Politics is organised in coalitions. After the 2022 election produced a hung parliament, Pakatan Harapan (PH) of Anwar Ibrahim formed a unity government with Barisan Nasional (BN), led by UMNO, and parties from Sabah and Sarawak. Perikatan Nasional (PN), made up of PAS and Bersatu, is the main opposition.
The divides that split voters
Race and religion, Bumiputera rights, the role of Islam, the 1MDB scandal and Najib Razak, subsidies and the cost of living, and the rights of Sabah and Sarawak dominate the debate.
How it looks on the compass
PH is a multiracial reformist coalition. BN is built around UMNO's Malay nationalism, and PN combines the Islamist PAS with the Malay nationalist Bersatu.
