28 statements on the issues dividing Trinidad and Tobago right now. Crime, the United States and Venezuela, energy, taxes and Tobago. See your alignment across all parties.
UNC
Your answers most closely match the United National Congress of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. You support a hard line on crime, including hangings and more licensed guns, close ties with the United States and scrapping the property tax.
PNM
Your answers most closely match the People's National Movement. You support regional cooperation through CARICOM, a Caribbean zone of peace, a property tax to fund local services and economic diversification.
TPP
Your answers most closely match the Tobago People's Party. You support full internal self-government for Tobago and a stronger voice for the island in national decisions.
Statements, asked twice
You take a position on sharp political and ideological statements using a six-point agreement scale. Key positions appear twice with opposite framing, once sympathetic and once critical. How much your answer shifts between the two framings becomes your framing bias score.
Alignment, not loyalty
The result shows how closely your answers match each position across all issues, not just the ones you feel strongly about. You might find you align with a party or ideology you didn't expect, or that you're genuinely split between two.
Politics in Trinidad and Tobago: the context of this test
Trinidad and Tobago is a parliamentary republic. The House of Representatives has 41 seats elected by first-past-the-post, and Tobago also has its own assembly. The last general election was held on 28 April 2025.
The party system
Two parties dominate, with support that has historically followed ethnic lines. Kamla Persad-Bissessar's United National Congress (UNC) won the 2025 election, defeating the People's National Movement (PNM), which had governed since 2015. In Tobago, the Tobago People's Party controls the Tobago House of Assembly and won both of the island's seats in Parliament.
The divides that split voters
Violent crime, the economy and foreign exchange, oil and gas, relations with the United States and Venezuela, taxes and Tobago's autonomy dominate the debate.
How it looks on the compass
Both main parties support a market economy with a large state funded by energy revenue. The UNC under Persad-Bissessar has taken a harder line on crime and closer alignment with the United States, while the PNM emphasises regional cooperation.
