Jamaica flagJamaica Political Test

Where do you stand in
Jamaican politics?

30 statements on the issues dividing Jamaica right now. Crime, taxes and wages, the republic, the environment and rights. See your alignment with the JLP and the PNP.

JLP
Your answers most closely match the Jamaica Labour Party of Prime Minister Andrew Holness. You support a firm line on crime including states of emergency, fiscal discipline, investment-led growth and traditional values.
PNP
Your answers most closely match the People's National Party led by Mark Golding. You support tax relief for workers, more social spending, a republic with the Caribbean Court of Justice, and protection of civil liberties and the environment.

Statements, asked twice

You take a position on sharp political and ideological statements using a six-point agreement scale. Key positions appear twice with opposite framing, once sympathetic and once critical. How much your answer shifts between the two framings becomes your framing bias score.

Alignment, not loyalty

The result shows how closely your answers match each position across all issues, not just the ones you feel strongly about. You might find you align with a party or ideology you didn't expect, or that you're genuinely split between two.

Politics in Jamaica: the context of this test

Jamaica is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with King Charles III as head of state. The House of Representatives has 63 seats elected by first-past-the-post. The last general election was held on 3 September 2025.

The party system

Two parties have dominated Jamaican politics since independence in 1962. Andrew Holness's Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) won a third term in a row in 2025, taking 35 seats to 28 for the People's National Party (PNP) led by Mark Golding, after a close race. Weeks later Hurricane Melissa caused severe damage across the island.

The divides that split voters

Crime and states of emergency, the cost of living, taxes and wages, recovery from Hurricane Melissa, becoming a republic and the environment are central to the debate.

How it looks on the compass

Both parties sit near the centre and support a market economy with social programmes. The PNP has social democratic roots and places more weight on civil liberties and tax relief, while the JLP emphasises security, investment and fiscal discipline.
