Services that help keep your political reading private and see how the news is framed.

Taking a political test here is anonymous, but reading, researching and discussing politics online leaves a trail elsewhere: with your internet provider, the sites you visit and the accounts you sign up for. These are the tools we point readers to for reducing that exposure.

A VPN service from Nord Security. It encrypts the connection between your device and its servers, so your internet provider or a public Wi-Fi network cannot see which sites you visit.

Password manager

A password manager from Nord Security. It stores your logins and generates a different password for each account, so one breached site does not expose the rest.

News bias

A news app that groups coverage of the same story from many outlets and labels each source's political lean, so you can compare how the left, centre and right frame it.

What a VPN does, and does not do

A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN provider's server and replaces your IP address with the provider's. That stops your internet provider or a public Wi-Fi network from seeing which sites you visit, and it hides your IP address from those sites.

It is not a guarantee of anonymity. The VPN provider itself can see your traffic, so you are moving trust from your internet provider to the VPN company, and it does not stop sites identifying you through logins, cookies or browser fingerprints.

Why use a password manager

Reusing the same password across sites is one of the most common ways accounts get taken over. A password manager generates and stores a different strong password for each account, so a breach at one site does not expose the others. It is a simple step for anyone with accounts on forums, news sites or social networks.

How we choose what goes here
