Politics in Kenya: the context of this test
Kenya is a presidential republic with a two-chamber Parliament and 47 devolved counties under the 2010 constitution. The president serves five-year terms, with a limit of two. The next general election is due in August 2027.
The party system
Kenyan parties are built around leaders and regional alliances. President William Ruto of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) won in 2022. In 2025 he signed a pact with opposition leader Raila Odinga, bringing his ODM into a broad-based government. Odinga died later that year. A united opposition has formed around figures such as former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang'i and Martha Karua.
The divides that split voters
Taxes and the cost of living, public debt, the housing levy and new health insurance, police violence during the youth-led protests of 2024 and 2025, corruption and regional balance dominate the debate.
