Maldives flagMaldives Political Test

Where do you stand in
Maldivian politics?

14 statements on the issues dividing the Maldives right now. Press freedom, defections, elections, local councils and India. See your alignment with the PNC and the MDP.

PNC
Your answers most closely match the People's National Congress of President Mohamed Muizzu. You support a strong government with a stable majority, regulation of the media against misinformation and a foreign policy that guards sovereignty.
MDP
Your answers most closely match the Maldivian Democratic Party, the main opposition. You support press freedom, strong local councils, checks on the president and close ties with India.

Statements, asked twice

You take a position on sharp political and ideological statements using a six-point agreement scale. Key positions appear twice with opposite framing, once sympathetic and once critical. How much your answer shifts between the two framings becomes your framing bias score.

Alignment, not loyalty

The result shows how closely your answers match each position across all issues, not just the ones you feel strongly about. You might find you align with a party or ideology you didn't expect, or that you're genuinely split between two.

Politics in the Maldives: the context of this test

The Maldives is a presidential republic. The president and the 93-member People's Majlis are elected separately for five years. Mohamed Muizzu won the presidency in 2023, and his party won a supermajority in the 2024 parliamentary election.

The party system

The People's National Congress (PNC) of President Muizzu and its allies hold 79 of 93 seats. The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is the main opposition. In April 2026 voters rejected the government's plan for concurrent elections, and the MDP made gains in the local council elections held the same day.

The divides that split voters

Press freedom, checks on the president, the powers of local councils, relations with India and China, corruption and the cost of living dominate the debate.

How it looks on the compass

The parties differ less on economic ideology than on democracy, the concentration of power and foreign policy.
