16 statements on the issues dividing Botswana right now. Diamonds, jobs and wages, pensions, state companies and the constitution. See your alignment across all parties.
UDC
Your answers most closely match the Umbrella for Democratic Change of President Duma Boko. You support a higher minimum wage and pensions, more national control of diamonds, reform of state companies and accountability for the past.
BCP
Your answers most closely match the Botswana Congress Party. You support constitutional reform to limit presidential power, workers' rights, social support and public ownership of strategic services.
BDP
Your answers most closely match the Botswana Democratic Party. You support fiscal discipline, the partnership with De Beers, the existing constitution and a market economy.
Statements, asked twice
You take a position on sharp political and ideological statements using a six-point agreement scale. Key positions appear twice with opposite framing, once sympathetic and once critical. How much your answer shifts between the two framings becomes your framing bias score.
Alignment, not loyalty
The result shows how closely your answers match each position across all issues, not just the ones you feel strongly about. You might find you align with a party or ideology you didn't expect, or that you're genuinely split between two.
Politics in Botswana: the context of this test
Botswana is a parliamentary republic in which the National Assembly elects the president. MPs are elected by first-past-the-post. The last general election was held on 30 October 2024.
The party system
The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) governed from independence in 1966 until 2024, when the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) won 36 seats and Duma Boko became president. The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) won 15 seats and the BDP only 4, despite winning more votes than the BCP.
The divides that split voters
The slump in diamond sales, jobs and wages, the public finances, state companies, constitutional reform and accountability for the past dominate the debate.
How it looks on the compass
The UDC and BCP are centre-left and stress jobs, wages and reform, while the BDP is centre-right and emphasises fiscal discipline and continuity.
