Politiek in Suriname: de context van deze test
Suriname is een republiek. De 51 leden van De Nationale Assemblee worden voor vijf jaar gekozen en kiezen de president met een tweederdemeerderheid. De laatste verkiezingen waren op 25 mei 2025.
Het partijlandschap
De NDP won in 2025 nipt met 18 zetels tegen 17 voor de VHP van president Chandrikapersad Santokhi. Een coalitie van vijf partijen koos Jennifer Geerlings-Simons van de NDP op 6 juli 2025 tot de eerste vrouwelijke president van Suriname. ABOP en NPS behoren tot de andere belangrijke partijen.

Hoe het eruitziet op het kompas
Partijen in Suriname zijn van oudsher vaak verbonden met etnische groepen. De NDP is linksnationalistisch, de VHP gematigd en marktgericht, ABOP richt zich op het binnenland en de NPS is een oude centrumpartij.
